Attention is shown to detail here....
This is a very good hotel, and I use a good few with business here. The staff are bright and very helpful (especially front desk), the hotel is spotless, the superior room (and its bathroom) I had was big and with good facilities (tea, coffee, soap, towels etc). Internet is free and there is a library with papers.
Water - The beach is vast, clean and empty of tourist clutter so you can go for a pleasant, lonely stroll and view and enjoy nature (the crabs are really cute!). There was surf there when I came and a few people on boards. The infinity pool is big so you can get in some serious swimming if its not too busy. There are about 4 jacuzis in it and a small slide for the children.
Clients are mainly French with a few German and British nationals. I didn't eat any meals apart from breakfast, but that was excellent, despite me scraping in ten minutes before it ended when you usually expect them to have run out of everything.
I would have given it ten out of ten but for three things:
1. A tiny patch of diesel in one corner of the pool one day.
2. The sink plug didnt work.
3. They had the nerve to charge me 500 baht for a liquid soap dispenser I broke, which you could buy for about 50 baht wholesale.
Top tip - get your massage with the thai girls down by the beach and pay a third what you would in the luxurious hotel spa. (And please give them a tip!)

No particular claim; for us everything was...
No particular claim; for us everything was OK (we are a couple of 60 years old and this was our 40 years wedding travel); the hotel location is fantastic in terms of quietness, beauty of landscapes, kindness of local people, hotel employees). The food in the hotel was excellent and various (local and international food); WE WILL RETURN. We enjoyed also the French animation of LOOKVOYAGES team we want to sincerely thank as well; this was in April 2009.

The Apsaras is a new-built hotel, replacing...
The Apsaras is a new-built hotel, replacing one that was flushed awy in the 2004 tragedy. It is situated about 20 km north of Khao Lak "city" on one of the most stunning beaches. Next door, construction work is frantic as the re-building of the other resorts are in progress. Thus, when we visited, the Apsaras looked a bit strange, being the only one completed in a otherwise huge construction area. But it is not at all disturbing. Rooms are nice (we took a quite luxury one though and not a standard room) and brand new. Efficient and quiet AC is a plus! The staff however were still in training it seemed. A lot of people hanging around the restaurant, but no one of them taking up orders; orders from the kitchen getting mixed up, and general confusion are a few things we noticed. Also, the staff are not really good at rapidly cleaning up the pool area - empty bottles, cigarettes and paper we lying around for days. Although it is sad that the guests leave it like that, so perhaps it says more about them On the downside were exactly that - the guests. When we arrived, the hotel was packed with noisy charter tourists, that were just throwing stuff around, leaving empty glasses, bottles, plastic bags etc. Most of them were swedish and german and seemed not to have any idea about how to behave when visting another country. No finess what so ever, which is why we got a bit disappointed; we wanted the peace and quiet we expect (and normally get) from a five star resort, but ended up in Mallorca... Breakfast buffet ok but not stunning. The other meals we ok, but we escaped into town instead. So, with great rooms, wonderful location, but with disturbing and unpleasant clientel, we regret to say we will not go back to Apsaras. Choosing one of the "real" upscale resorts (which are close by) is a safer bet, especially since the price was almost twice what we paid for a top 5-star hotel in Bangkok.
