Great experience!
A friend recommended me Kata Palm Resort. Takes about an hr's travel from the airport. Lots of eateries and shopping places near the resort. Plenty of choices.
Rooms were clean and spacious. We went during the off peak period so the rates were cheap. 2 complimentary bottles of water are provided, and if it's not enough you can always purchase more at the numerous mini marts situated near the resort. We had free buffet breakfast during our stay, and contrary to many reviews, I found the quality pretty decent. The swimming pool isn't conducive for swimming laps, but its big enough for lounging around in and soaking up the sun. There's also a pool bar.
If you're planning to travel around the area, the car rates provided at the hotel recep is quite cheap. We got ripped off trying to get a cab outside instead, thinking it's cheaper. Potential travellers might want to take note. Another mode of transport that seems pretty popular is renting of scooters, though we didn't try it.
A good place for a getaway if you're looking for a nice place to chill out. Plenty of massage parlours providing cheap rates.We spent most of our time eating and going for massages.

Worth the money
You can't expect too much for the incredible price you pay per night at this hotel, so we were simply expecting the basics; ie. clean room, etc. We were pleasantly surprised and our expectations mostly met. The lobby is beautiful - very Thai style and nicely done up, and we were served drinks and cold towels on arrival. The frontdesk staff could have been more polite but considering there were only two of them they might have been a bit overloaded at some points, so generally it was alright.
The pools are definitely a highlight; decently sized and clean. We didn't take a direct pool access room but it was alright; the pools were extremely close to the rooms. The nearby beach is about a 10 minute slow stroll away - not unmanageable and still fun as the hotel is very conveniently located to shops - shopping, food, massages, 7-11, etc - and there was plenty to see.
One disappointment was the hotel buffet, however - while there was a wide spread there wasn't much variety and on some days some of the food choices were not that good-tasting. The egg station was good, however, and the breakfast restaurant very nice especially on the verandah.
The rooms were clean and done up nicely in a Thai-style. Being used to a firm bed, the beds weren't too bad - but they were extra firm. Toilet was clean and all the usual amenities available - minifridge, water boiler, tea/coffee + free water everyday, umbrellas, beach towels. We had a balcony overlooking the pool just like everyone else's.
Overall, it was a good experience; major plus points were location (assuming you don't want to stay in Patong) and overall setting and decor + pool. Very worth the money as it was cheap and affordable, but don't expect too much either. Would stay again.

We enjoyed our stay, great pool and gardens, close to food, shopping and beach, staff friendly and helpful, nice room with balcony, l did read some negative comments about the breakfast, but l guess people will always find something to complain about, we found the breakfast great with a good variety to suit most nationalities, would happily stay here again.

Typical Thai Hotel
The room quality is good, the facilities (swimming pool, spa, internet at lobby) are working very well. Although the price is little bit expensive. The hotel is very near to the Kata beach within 5 mins walking. There are two 7-11s near the hotel as well. The local travel agency is convenient.
The breakfast buffet is good there are varieties.
I think it's good value for money.

Really value for money in terms of...
Really value for money in terms of location, price and facilities. I like the free use of internet and wifi at the hotel lobby as I need to check my emails every now and then. Restaurant, shopping and beach all within walking distance. Breakfast is just sufficient to fill your stomach so don't expect a banquet.

Very very close to beautiful Kata Beach and very close to good food and bars. Best bars in Patong however, Kata is far less seedy.
300 Baht to Patong by tuk tuk.
August weather supposedly unpredictable, but we had nothing but Sun!
Recommend hiring scooter (200 baht/day) straight away and visiting the big buddha, great views!
Hotel organises all outings eg. 1400 baht/person for day trip on speed boat, recommend!
1000 baht to bring girls back to the room :D

During my short stay (3 days 2 nights) at Kata Palm Resort, I am overall pleased. Initially I had reservations about staying in this resort due to some poor reviews I had read. Luckily I go ahead with the bookings and was pleasantly surprised with it (no regrets). Really good value and the buffet breakfast varieties provided was enough to satisfy me (cannot expect 5 stars buffet for the value you are paying). About 10 mins walking distance to the beach and food stalls aplenty, all within walking distance.
